Recent news reports have highlighted the increasing problem of suicide in Northern Ireland. An often unreported statistic is that 1 in 8 suicides involves a person over 65. Hard to imagine. We also have a major problem with teenage suicide. What is it that makes people move beyond the instinct of self-preservation, the loss of fear about pain? Thomas Joiner has an excellent book "Why people die by suicide" which helps anser some of these questions.
