Greatest Ever?

Yesterday, Michael Phelps, became the most decorated athlete in th history of the Olympics. He now holds 11 Gold medals, and with other races to go, this may climb to 14. The previous record was held by a few athletes with 9 medals.
A debate has begun though, as to the greatest ever Olympian, with those involved in track and field claiming that the endurance involved in their sports would make such a medal hall impossible.
However, no one should dismiss what Phelps achieves, in the pool he is peerless, and he breaks records with ease. Its entirely possible that he will still be around for london 2012, and perhaps with a slimmed down challenge he may leave those games with another medal haul, and enter the history books as having won his medals over 3 different games. Something which few will ever emulate.
Out of 8 races the story so far.
Aug 10 - 400m Individual Medley - Gold
Aug 11 - 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay - Gold
Aug 12 - 200m Freestyle - Gold
Aug 13 - 200m Butterfly - Gold
Aug 13 - 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay - Gold
only 3 more to go...
