Death and Destruction

On Saturday a terrorist group calling itself the Real IRA murdered 2 soldiers, Sappers Mark Quinsey and Patrick Azimkar, at an army base in Antrim. The young men were murdered as they went to collect a pizza from a delivery driver.

The attack was carried out by experienced and well trained terrorists, as they fired at the soldiers then moved in on the injured men firing the remaining shots at close range.

The pizza delivery driver and his passenger were also injured in the terrorist attack.

During the 70's, 80's and 90's the Provisional IRA carried out a terrorist campaign, supported by their political wing Sinn Fein. This attack is different, it is the first time politicians from all of Northern Ireland's political parties have condemned a terrorist attack. The young men murdered were only hours away from deployment to Afghanistan. They were the first soldiers to be killed here by terrorists for 12 years.

I wrote to the last soldier's to be killed prior to this incident (Lance Bombardier Stephen Restorick) mother back in 1997 expressing my condolences and offering sympathy and support during those dark days. I had hoped then, as I do now, that there will be no more killings in the name of a political cause on this island.

Was it ever established whether the soldiers ever ordered the pizza, or did the terrorists call it in? It's such a shame that some people thrive on chaos.

No the pizza delivery company had nothing to do with it. The terrorists used this as an opportune moment to attack the unarmed soldiers. It is being reported that one of the dead soldiers threw himself on top of the young pizza delivery boy to prevent him from being injured.

Regrettably last night another terrorist attack took place and a policeman was murdered in Craigavon.
